Individual therapy is tailored to the specific needs of the individual, which means it can be beneficial to almost anyone. An individual's current needs will dictate the treatment plan, though this could change over the course of therapy. Whether you're coping with grief or psychological trauma, handling depression or career dissatisfaction, or simply seeking to improve your general outlook, individual counseling can provide some form of healing. Along the way, the therapist will likely identify non-beneficial behavioral patterns you may not even be aware of, so therapy can help you grow as a person, too.

 

Individual therapy is different than talking with a friend or family member. While loved ones can offer great advice and support, they're rarely objective and aren't trained to evaluate various elements of trauma and pain. In addition, unlike friends and family, a therapist is bound by a confidentiality agreement. This helps you feel safe, so you can build a trusting relationship with your therapist while you figure out who you are and what you want in your life. That's where real change happens. In fact, the effects of talk therapy are so profound that evidence suggests it can even affect the structure of the brain.

 

Ongoing one-on-one therapy and counseling is a common means of growth and healing for many people. Individual one-on-one therapy, often referred to as psychotherapy, involves meeting with a therapist individually in order to reduce internal suffering, which often causes problematic behavior.

 

One-on-one therapy can help to break down barriers that interfere with emotional and mental well-being. ICL Psychotherapy clients begin to value the journey to becoming more conscious about themselves, their inner world, and their relationships – where compassion, peace, joy, self-esteem, spiritual connections and love are imparted using the tools they’ve learned in one-on-one therapy.

What is Involved with One-On-One Therapy

Individual sessions at ICL Psychotherapy average 50 minutes to an hour. The therapist strives to help the client to understand themselves and their problems in order to cope with the demands of their everyday lives. Goals are set, which may involve replacing negative thoughts with positive ones, facing specific fears, or changing behavioral patterns.  The techniques used by therapists (word association, for example) help to reveal the client’s wishes and feelings, providing insight into their actions.

 

Clients suffering from various addictions are often isolated, which makes the addiction worse. Individual therapy can include inner child therapy, core belief therapy, and cognitive behavioral therapy. The method used depends upon the client’s problems and personality. For example, using the Gestalt technique, therapists might show the client a picture of something that could have multiple interpretations. Using the Gestalt method of studying the visual perception of the client allows the therapist to gain better insight into their inner workings.

One-on-one therapy can treat specific mental health conditions ranging from depression and anxiety to substance abuse. However, many clients do not have a specific condition; they simply seek help for relationship problems, stress, career ambitions, and many more personal issues.
